(Calcium + Vitamin D3 Supplement)

Each 5 mL contains:
Calcium Carbonate IP (from Oyster Shell): 625 mg
Equivalent to Elemental Calcium: 250 mg
Vitamin D3: 125 I.U.

Ostobid Suspension is a nutritional supplement containing elemental calcium from an organic oyster shell source, combined with Vitamin D3, which enhances calcium absorption in the intestine. It helps in the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.

Mechanism of Action:

Calcium is a key component of the bone matrix, primarily stored as hydroxyapatite, a calcium phosphate compound.
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) promotes intestinal absorption of calcium, ensuring its availability for bone mineralization and metabolic functions.

Indications:

Rickets
Osteopenia
Steroid-induced osteoporosis
Osteomalacia
Hypocalcaemia

Contraindications:

Known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation

Warnings:

Prolonged excessive calcium intake may lead to:

Hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria
Poor muscle tone
Impaired renal function
Hypophosphatemia
Constipation, nausea, vomiting
Weight loss, fatigue
Arrhythmias
Polyuria

Dosage and Administration:

5 mL once or twice daily, or as directed by the healthcare provider

Absorption: Enhanced in the presence of Vitamin D3; oyster shell calcium offers superior bioavailability compared to standard calcium carbonate
Distribution: Primarily distributed in bones
Excretion:

- ~10% excreted via urine
- 3–4% excreted in feces
- Also found in breast milk

Side Effects:

May cause constipation or diarrhea
Nausea and vomiting in rare cases

Drug-Drug Interactions:

Avoid antacids, H₂ blockers, and PPIs around the time of administration, as they reduce calcium absorption
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin) have reduced absorption if taken within 2 hours of calcium supplements
